Parikrama’s 35-Year Journey: India’s Rock Icons Open Up

They started in 1991 in New Delhi, when India’s rock scene barely had a stage to call its own. Thirty-five years later, Parikrama is still touring, still writing, and still talking directly to fans — this time in a full-band Reddit AMA on r/concertsindia that covered everything from songwriting philosophy to the legacy of guitarist Sonam Sherpa. In 35 years of Indian rock, very few bands have stayed this honest, this active, and this connected.

Parikrama’s 35 Years: From Delhi Campuses to Download Festival

Formed in Delhi in 1991, Parikrama built their reputation the hard way — on stage, every time, without shortcuts. While much of the Indian music industry chased film playback and album cycles, Parikrama put their energy into live performances. That choice defined what they became.

Their sound has always blended conventional rock instruments with Indian classical elements — flute, tabla, and mridangam woven into guitar-driven arrangements. It gave the band a texture that felt unmistakably desi without losing any edge.

A few things that mark what 35 years looks like:

  • 2007: Toured internationally with Iron Maiden, including a slot at the Download Festival in England — one of the world’s biggest rock events
  • Widely regarded as one of Asia’s largest rock acts by audience size and live reputation
  • Decades of college campus shows, open-air festivals, and arena gigs across India — the backbone of their career

What the Reddit AMA Revealed

The AMA on r/concertsindia brought out the band’s full current lineup together — a rare thing for any band approaching four decades. Fans asked what they actually wanted to know, and the band answered without the usual PR polish.

Topics that came up in the session:

  • Band longevity — how they’ve kept the lineup stable when so many peers dissolved or spent years in lineup chaos
  • Songwriting philosophy — the creative process behind music that has spanned three distinct decades of Indian pop culture
  • Life on the road — what three-plus decades of touring India actually looks like from the inside
  • India’s rock scene evolution — from underground campus gigs in the 1990s to the multi-city festival circuit of today

The band’s “rock and roll for life” ethos came through clearly. This is not a nostalgia act playing the hits — Parikrama is an active band with things to say.

The Legacy of Sonam Sherpa

No honest conversation about Parikrama exists without Sonam Sherpa. The band’s founding lead guitarist died of cardiac arrest in February 2020 — a loss that hit the Indian rock community hard.

Sonam, alongside vocalist Nitin Malik, was central to much of Parikrama’s early songwriting and composition. His guitar work gave the band its voice in the 1990s and carried it through two decades of recordings and live shows. The Reddit AMA saw fans raise the topic of his legacy, and the band’s responses reflected how deeply his memory continues to shape what they do.

Continuing to play the music is its own form of tribute — and Parikrama understands that.

The Six Members Carrying It Forward

The band that showed up to the AMA is a tight six-piece with deep collective history:

Role Member
Lead Vocals Nitin Malik
Keyboards Subir Malik
Lead Guitar Abhishek Mittal
Rhythm Guitar Saurabh Chaudhry
Bass Gaurav Balani
Drums Srijan Mahajan

Brothers Nitin and Subir Malik are founding members — part of this band since 1991. The current lineup’s stability is increasingly rare in any rock band of this age, anywhere in the world.

Why 35 Years in Indian Rock Still Means Something

India’s music industry moves fast. Trends cycle quickly, streaming reshapes what gets heard, and the economics of live music look nothing like they did in 1991. For a rock band to maintain genuine creative output, a stable lineup, and a real audience through all of that — for 35 years — is genuinely uncommon.

Parikrama has done it without becoming a museum piece. They’re still performing, still engaging fans directly, still showing up. For anyone trying to understand what makes Indian independent rock endure, they’re the clearest example available.

Rest In Beats covers the Indian music scene week to week — artists, releases, and moments worth following.

Parikrama’s Reddit AMA is a reminder that some bands don’t need anniversaries to stay relevant. Thirty-five years in, they’re still the ones asking you: aur suno?
